The epic crossing of Vancouver Island: 310 km from Victoria to Tofino, through temperate rainforest, Beaufort Mountains and out to the wild Pacific. One of Canada's essential road trips.
Hwy 4 (Pacific Rim Highway) crosses MacMillan Provincial Park (Cathedral Grove, 800-year-old Douglas firs up to 75 m), climbs Sutton Pass (1,350 m descent to Port Alberni), follows Sproat Lake and emerges at Pacific Rim National Park. Long Beach (16 km) is legendary for winter surfing and storm watching.
