Beyond Pemberton, Hwy 99 (Duffey Lake Road) climbs through the Coast Mountains before plunging into the interior desert of Lillooet — one of Canada's hottest, driest places (up to 45 °C in summer).

Duffey Lake, a glacial lake at the foot of the Coast Mountains, offers cinematic scenery. Cayoosh Pass tops out at 1,275 m. Lillooet, a former gold-rush camp, perches above the Fraser River in desert cliffs. Historic start of the Cariboo Wagon Road. Dry climate, stone fruits, intimate wineries.
